The worldwide health pandemic has presented many challenges for CIOs in 2020. With 2021 quickly approaching, the recovery for many business leaders means more than just returning to their former state. Rather, it’s a top to bottom rethinking of how their business should be operated and structured. CIOs will play a pivotal role in the road to recovery for their organization while also fulfilling their traditional roles.

The following predictions, based on IDC FutureScape: Worldwide CIO Agenda 2021 Predictions, present information about technologies, markets, and ecosystems to help CIOs better understand future trends and their impact on the enterprise.

1: By 2022, 65% of CIOs will digitally empower and enable frontline workers with data, AI, and security to extend their productivity, adaptability, and decision making in the face of rapid changes – Businesses need teams that will work autonomously to make decisions in the face of uncertainty. Frontline workers are in an ideal position to acquire real-time knowledge on fluctuations in customer behaviors and external environments. However, they need access to data and intelligence tools that are seamlessly embedded in their workflows. CIOs will need to bolster IT capabilities in data science, AI, and advanced intelligent workflow design.

2: Through 2023, coping with technical debt accumulated during the pandemic will shadow 70% of CIOs, causing financial stress, inertial drag on IT agility, and “forced march” migrations to the cloud – As a reaction to rapidly shifting business conditions, many CIOs had to shortcut normal IT protocols in order to implement digital solutions. These shortcuts made it unavoidable for many CIOs to accumulate debt, creating an obligation to mitigate deficiencies in the future. CIOs will need to look for opportunities to design next-generation digital platforms that will modernize infrastructure and applications while still delivering flexible capabilities to create new products, services, and experiences.

3: By 2023, global crises will make 75% of CIOs integral to business decision making as digital infrastructure becomes the business OS while moving from business continuation to reconceptualization – IT will play a pivotal role in business recovery with leadership of enterprise technology, risk mitigation, and cost optimization. CIOs have an opportunity to provide an enterprise “operating system” made of digital infrastructure, intelligence, and IT capabilities that will be necessary in powering their business into the future.
